May Flowers
The old
saying goes, “April Showers bring May flowers.” In nature and in life it is
often the case, that, out of the storms comes something beautiful.

April brings a higher chance for tornadoes and other dangerous weather; but
there is a reward for going through the storms -- May flowers. May is a
beautiful time of the year.
May is also a time for endings and new beginnings. Graduates will end their high
school or college years, and go on to new schools or a first job. For some kids,
school was a storm they endured; and graduation is pure excitement. For other
kids, there is sadness at the close of one of life’s chapters and excitement at
the beginning of the new chapter.
Mixed
weather, mixed feelings -- May is filled with both.
This year, our civil calendar and our church calendar both have May 11 as an
important day -- Mother’s Day. It’s also Pentecost. For me, it’s also graduation
day for the oldest of my nieces and nephews. On Sunday, May 11, I’ll be in
Nebraska attending my nephew’s commencement ceremony. I have mixed feelings
about it. I’m excited for him, but it doesn’t seem like he should be that old.
(Or, that I should be that old!)
May will
be an exciting month for the church. On Fridays in May, Covenant’s young adult
softball team will play double headers. We are excited to have that many young
people getting together to enjoy a time of fun and friendship, and to do it as
members of our church. Go Team!
During
worship on May 4, we’ll recognize our Sunday School teachers to show our
appreciation for their service. It is also Will Emphasis Sunday, and
we’ll hear a Moment for Mission on legacy giving. Harvey Friedel and I will team
up to present a dialogical sermon. After church, there will be a
Green Eggs
and Ham Dinner and a Servant Auction fundraiser.
On Sunday, May 18 several things are happening. Men’s Fellowship meets at 8:00
a.m. During worship, we’ll recognize this year’s graduates; and we’ll have
communion. Following worship, Ranch House Kids will have their last meeting
until fall. At 4:30 p.m. the youth and anyone who would like to see
The
Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian will go see the movie. Details are
still being worked out, but Jon and Jimmie Stromberg are hosting a
dinner for
the 30 to 50-somethings. The speaker will be Mateen Elass who grew up a Muslim
in Saudi Arabia and is now the new pastor at First Presbyterian Church in
Edmond, OK.
We’ve got some exciting things happening. We hope you’ll be a part of the
excitement.
Serving Christ, and Sharing Joy,
Rev. Ron
